Notable Events on Governors Island 700 BC -1500 AD Lenape Indians settle on “Pagganck” meaning Nut or Place for Walnuts 1611 - Dutch name it “Noten Eylant” . 1637 - Wouter van Twiller buys island for two ax heads, a string of beads and handful of nails. 1664 - English take over. 1710 - Thousands of German refugees quarantined on the Island. 1821 - Island becomes Army headquarters. 1849-70 - Cholera & Yellow fever epidemics sweep Island. 1909 - Wilbur Wright takes off from Governors Island 1938 - Comedians Tommy and Dick Smothers are born at the base hospital 1942 - WAC detachment brings island's first women soldiers. 1983 - Burger King opens - serves beer 1996 - Coast Guard leaves Governors Island. 2002 - Bush sells island back to NY for $1. |
